Sunflowers! Easy as pie..

How easy can it be to grow a sunflower? Easy as pie!

Sunflower seeds will grow...even by me and believe me when I say, the world would starve if I was the only farmer in the land.

Everyone worries what would happen if food became a shortage. It would take a lot of sunflowers to feed a nation, but we're not talking about them. We're just talking about you. And kids love to grow them as well.

They provide beauty when they blossom. They help the honeybee in their present plight. And a handful of seeds will provide protein to you, if need be. Stick a few more in the ground and let the heads cure. The birds will appreciate that as well.

The giant ones will provide shade - have an overly sunny window? Stick three seeds in front of it for the summer.

And when all is said and done, you can store the stalks to use as pea or bean poles for the next year's crop. They're not as strong as wood, but they're not flimsy either.

So what does it take to grow sunflowers? Just push it in the ground. It doesn't have to be lovely ground either as one year I planted them in front of the barn kennel - need I say more? I had a great crop of them and even gave them away to people who wanted to feed birds that winter (while saving a few seeds for reseeding that next Spring).

Sunflowers - easy as pie!
